Community Guidelines

Trust & Safety · Updated May 6, 2008

MyFirstWebsite is home to family pages, small businesses, teams, clubs and personal journals. These guidelines help keep it a friendly place for everyone. They apply to every website we host and to every comment and guestbook entry left on those sites.

Be respectful

  • No threats or harassment. Don't threaten, bully or target a person, and don't encourage others to.
  • Keep private information private. Don't publish anyone's home address, phone number, email address, financial details or similar information without their permission.
  • Be yourself. Don't pretend to be another person or organization in a way that could fool people.
  • No hateful content that attacks people because of their race, religion, nationality, disability, gender or sexual orientation.

Keep it legal and safe

  • Don't publish anything illegal, or anything that encourages illegal activity.
  • Only publish photos, music and writing you have the right to use.
  • No spam, viruses, or pages that ask for people's passwords.
  • Adult content must be marked as adult in your site settings.

Writing about other people

Lots of our members write about their lives, and that sometimes means writing about other people: family, friends, neighbors or coworkers. That's allowed. Sharing your own experiences and opinions is not against our rules, as long as you don't threaten anyone, share their private information or encourage others to harass them.

How comment moderation works

Comments and guestbook entries make websites more fun, but they also attract spam and, sometimes, people who want to cause trouble. To protect our members, comments on free sites are reviewed by the MyFirstWebsite moderation team before they appear.

  1. A visitor writes a comment or guestbook entry and clicks Submit.
  2. The visitor sees a message that their comment has been received and is awaiting review.
  3. Our moderation team checks the comment against these Community Guidelines.
  4. Approved comments appear on the site. Comments that break our guidelines, or that the site's settings don't allow, are not published.

Here's what a visitor sees after leaving a comment on a free site:

Thanks! Your comment has been received.

Comments on this site are reviewed by MyFirstWebsite before they appear. This usually takes 1–3 business days.

Frequently asked questions about moderation

How long does a review take?
Usually 1 to 3 business days. During busy periods, such as the current server upgrade, it can take longer.
Will I be told if my comment isn't approved?
No. To keep the review queue moving, we don't send a notice when a comment is not published.
Can the site owner approve comments?
On free sites, no. Free site owners can choose whether comments are allowed at all, and which pages accept them. Members with a Pro or Business plan can moderate comments on their own sites instead.
Can I edit or delete a comment I left?
Not after you've sent it. If you need a comment removed, use the Report Abuse page.
A comment about me was approved. What can I do?
If it breaks these guidelines, please report it and our Trust & Safety team will take another look.

Breaking the rules

If a site or comment breaks these guidelines, we may remove the content, suspend the site or close the account, depending on how serious it is. To report something, use the Report Abuse page.
